By Anna Petr

Meet T.S. Berger, a remarkable individual whose talent, dedication, and love for running have left an indelible mark on the racing community. As a skilled artist and former athlete, T.S. Berger has not only made a name for himself as a successful competitor in marathons and races across the nation but has also become a celebrated figure in the realm of coveted race awards for the Firekracker 5k.

Born in Ohio and raised in the beautiful state of Colorado, T.S. Berger’s journey into the world of running began early in life. Graduating from Colorado State University in 1973 with a degree in Art and a minor in Education, he also excelled in athletics, participating in cross country and indoor/outdoor track for four seasons during his college years.

Throughout the 1960s and 70s, T.S. Berger’s passion for running led him to participate in numerous marathons and races, achieving remarkable success and setting himself apart as an exceptional athlete. However, his talents extended beyond the track and into the classroom, where he served as a beloved art teacher at Poudre High School, in Fort Collins CO. Not content with just teaching, he took on the role of assistant coach for cross country, wrestling, and track & field, guiding four individuals and four additional teams to victory in State Championships over the years. He was always more than just a coach; he was an inspirational mentor who brought out the best in his athletes and fellow coaches, urging them to reach their fullest potential both academically and athletically.

T.S. Berger’s impact on the community earned him accolades, including the Poudre School District Outstanding Teacher Award and the Food Bank of Larimer County Empty Bowls Award. Notably, he was a runner-up for the prestigious Colorado Education Association Teacher of the Year. His dedication to teaching and coaching, combined with his artistic prowess, earned him a special place in the hearts of those he influenced.

Currently serving as a faculty member at the University of Northern Colorado, T.S. Berger continues to share his knowledge and passion for physical education and art. He imparts his wisdom to future educators while also teaching art at a local elementary school. As a member of the Trimble Court Artisans in Old Town, his artistic talent remains a vibrant aspect of his life.

T.S. Berger’s artistic flair and dedication to running have come together in a unique way, as he is the professional artist who makes all the FireKracker 5k ceramic awards for the past 23 years, ever since the start of the race. Each year this is a total of 125 awards! His creations serve as tangible symbols of achievement and celebration for countless runners, providing a lasting reminder of their accomplishments. T.S. used to spend his earnings from the awards on a pair of diamond earrings for his wife. However, being the supporter of the running community that he is, the cost of diamond earrings has now surpassed what he is willing to charge even though his work is far more valuable.

Beyond his professional endeavors, T.S. Berger cherishes a loving family. He shares a fulfilling life with his wife Terri, and together, they are proud parents to their son, Jeffrey.

T.S. Berger’s journey is a testament to the power of pursuing one’s passions, making a positive impact on others, and leaving a lasting legacy in the world of athletics and art. His story continues to inspire runners, artists, and educators alike, urging them to strive for greatness and create a positive difference in the lives of those they touch.
