❄️ Into the Ice at Horsetooth Reservoir ❄️
When the ice was cut on Friday afternoon, just in time for Saturday’s Polar Plunge, the stage was set for one of the coldest—and most daring—events of the season. With snow in the forecast overnight and flurries expected on plunge day, most people would likely think, “Absolutely not!” or even, “Who in their right mind jumps into a frozen lake?”
As it turns out, the snow arrived right on cue, blanketing the ground in the early morning hours and continuing throughout the day. But for hundreds of bold participants, the answer to those questions was loud and clear: “YES, I WILL!” Together, they transformed hesitation into action, trading comfort for courage and diving headfirst into an unforgettable experience.

This year’s plunge delivered on its promise of a true polar adventure. The water temperature? A chilling 34°F, freshly exposed after 4” inches of ice was cut and removed. The air temperature? Hovering in the mid to low 20s. Intimidating? Absolutely. But despite the icy sting and the initial shock, the collective bravery and community camaraderie helped every single plunger take that leap into the frigid depths.

The Larimer County Dive Rescue Team stood strong in the water, ensuring every participant’s safety. For some, this event is a cherished annual tradition; for others it might have been their first and their last. No matter what, the moment of impact was a breath-stealing shock followed by smiles, cheers, and a sense of accomplishment like no other.
Beneficiary of the Polar Plunge is the all-volunteer run Larimer County Dive Rescue Team, whose dedication made this event possible. From standing guard in the freezing water to holding a training class onsite to improve and share their knowledge and skills, their efforts remind all of us of what it means to serve the community.
