Colorado Run 5k & 10k Race Recap

By Anna Petr
As the first race of the summer season, the Colorado Run kicked off our action-packed summer on May 27th at Spring Canyon Park. Some may know this starting place as the base of Maniac Hill. The 10k course runs up Monster Mountain 3.1 miles, then the runners fly downhill for the second half of the race, cruising to the finish line. Stephen Pretak was the winner of the 10k in a time of 35:16, followed by Carson Hume in 38:21 and Christopher Berven in 40:41 as the top three male (and overall) finishers. Sophie Seward was the first female to finish in 42:14 for 4th place, followed by Alex Macanally in 12th and Coni Hoerndli in 15th, with times of 47:48 and 48:44.

This 10k is a test of pure grit, perhaps best stated by Stephen post-race: “the up was ‘ow.’ The last mile required a lot of focus to
keep your pace… because you’re so tired and your quads are sore.” Some may have noticed that Stephen was not geared up in the most
‘traditional’ of race outfits, styling a button-down shirt. Stephen likes to make a fashion statement at races to provide entertainment and
a “thanks” to volunteers along the course, in addition to reminding himself not to take running so seriously. It is just point A to point B,
after all!

The 5k runners did not have to deal with the crazy hill, with Kierann Toth as the overall winner in a time of 19:18 and Christian Gerster as
the first male coming in second in 19:42, followed by John Fitts in 4th place and Noah Emery in 6th, with times of 20:00 and 21:39 for the male
category. The second and third women were Rachel Hulse and Taylor Robsinson with times of 19:51 and 20:17, finishing in 3rd and 5th,
respectively. All top three women were from the Fort Collins Running Club Racing Team!

Kierran, the mother of four, commented on what a beautiful day she had to win a race. “It’s been a bit of a rough week, sleep-wise,” she said.
Kierann was still happy to pull off an overall win out of nearly 150 finishers. The Colorado Run kicks off her summer of racing, as she plans
to race in the NoCo All-Comers Track Series as well as more Green Events Races!

This year’s Colorado Run was a success, with 312 race finishers, which includes a group who completed the race virtually from Utah and 11
people taking on the challenge of the ruck! As always, we appreciate the Green Events community’s support, positive attitude, and willingness to
help out as we go into a fun summer of races.

For many runners in the Colorado Run 10k, the energy coming from the ProActive Physical Therapy group at the top of Monster Mountain was enough to get them through the rest of the race. Not only did they bring
the energy for our Memorial Day celebration at the Colorado Run in the form of cheering, costumes, and donuts, but they have continually been an enthusiastic sponsor of Green Events. ProActive Physical Therapy and Performance Center is a place for athletes and non-athletes alike to help prevent injury and return to a healthy and functional state of movement. You can meet with a specialist for physical therapy, do a gait
analysis, or get a bike fit!
