Runner of the Month: Sloane Groendyk – Igniting the Track with Speed and Determination

This month, we’re thrilled to shine the spotlight on Sloane Groendyk, a remarkable 11-year-old athlete who is making waves in the running world. With victories in both the Mountain Avenue Mile and the Human Race 5k, Sloane’s speed, determination, and unwavering passion for the sport have earned her the title of Runner of the Month.

A Legacy of Running:
Sloane’s journey in the world of running began at the young age of six when she embarked on her first CARA track and cross-country experiences during the summer before first grade. Hailing from a running family, Sloane naturally gravitated towards the sport. Her passion for running was ignited early, and she’s been lacing up her shoes ever since.

A Mile of Joy:
When it comes to her favorite race distance, Sloane’s answer is unequivocal – the mile. With a natural inclination for middle-distance running, Sloane loves the mile. Her affection for the distance was brilliantly showcased in her recent victory at the Mountain Avenue Mile, where she demonstrated remarkable prowess with a winning time of 5:32. The straight course without turns perfectly matched her love for the mile, allowing her to showcase her speed with precision.

Conquering Challenges with Grace:
Sloane’s talent extends beyond the mile. The day following her triumphant performance in the Mountain Avenue Mile, she embraced the challenge of the Human Race 5k. Not only did she conquer the 5k distance, but she soared past it, clinching an age group victory with an impressive time of 20:25. This remarkable achievement underscores her versatility as a runner and her ability to excel across varying distances.

A Journey Full of Promise:
As a sixth-grader, Sloane’s journey is only beginning, but her ambitions are bright. Currently navigating her first middle school cross country season, Sloane is gearing up for a season of racing. With her track record of success, it’s no surprise that Sloane is poised to continue her streak on the cross country course.

Sloane’s story is one that exemplifies the spirit of a dedicated athlete. Her accomplishments at such a young age paint a picture of her determination and potential. As she continues to set her sights on new goals, Sloane stands tall as a beacon of inspiration for runners of all ages. Congratulations, Sloane, on being our well-deserved Runner of the Month!

Runner of the Month: Flynn Klein – A Young Running Phenom on the Rise

At just 11 years old, Flynn Klein is already making waves in the world of running. This rising star recently secured victory in the Mountain Avenue Mile kids race, clocking an impressive time of 5:22. Not only did Flynn win the Kids 1-Mile, but he ran the Human Race 5k the next day in a time of 19:26, winning the 12 & Under age group by well over a minute! Flynn’s dedication, passion, and remarkable achievements have earned him the well-deserved title of this month’s Runner of the Month.

A Journey That Began Early:
Flynn’s journey in the running world began at the young age of six when he joined his elementary school’s run club. The trails adjacent to his school became the canvas for his budding passion. With each out-and-back, Flynn collected popsicle sticks, and for every mile completed, he proudly added a plastic foot charm to his growing collection. The challenge of running, along with the allure of accumulating those coveted plastic feet, laid the foundation for Flynn’s love for the sport.

Favorite Race? The Answer is Multifaceted:
When asked about his favorite kind of race, Flynn’s answer is as versatile as his skill set. Having tackled distances ranging from 100 meters to 10k, Flynn’s range is truly impressive for his age. While he admits it’s a tough choice, he singles out the 5k as a personal favorite. With a balance between length and challenge, the 5k resonates with Flynn as a race that embodies the best of both worlds. However, Flynn’s affinity for the mile is undeniable. Not only did he break his school’s 1-mile record at the PSD elementary school track meet in May, but he also shattered that record during his victory at the Mountain Avenue Mile.

A Remarkable Milestone:
As Flynn reflects on his journey, it’s impossible to overlook a profound accomplishment. With remarkable resilience, Flynn and his family embarked on a unique endeavor during the challenging days of the Covid-19 shutdown in March 2020. For over three years now, Flynn has run a mile a day with his family, showcasing an extraordinary commitment to his passion and a testament to his unwavering dedication.

Embracing New Challenges:
Flynn’s journey is far from over. His recent foray into the middle school cross country team promises fresh challenges and exciting opportunities. With upcoming races of two miles, Flynn is set to conquer a new and exhilarating distance, further solidifying his status as a versatile and tenacious athlete.

Flynn Klein’s journey is an inspiring reminder that age is no barrier to achievement. His dedication, resilience, and genuine love for running make him a shining example of determination and passion in the world of athletics. As Flynn continues to lace up his shoes and chase after his dreams, the future is undoubtedly bright for this young running phenom.
