Colorado State Homecoming 5k Race Recap

In the heart of Ram country, beneath the golden canopy of autumn leaves, a sea of eager runners gathered to kick off the 43rd annual Colorado State University Homecoming 5k. This beloved event is more than just a race; it is a celebration of community, an embodiment of Ram
Pride, and a testament to the enduring spirit of CSU.

The event brought together a diverse crowd of participants, from students to alumni, and even virtual racers spanning the globe. It was an extraordinary opportunity for all ages and abilities to unite in the name of fun and fitness. And what better way to start Homecoming weekend than with a refreshing run around the iconic CSU Oval?

On the same day, the CSU Rams would go on to secure a triumphant victory against Boise State in a football showdown. This set the stage for an atmosphere charged with anticipation and camaraderie as runners laced up their shoes for the Homecoming 5K. The CSU Department of
Health and Exercise Science, in collaboration with Green Events, orchestrated this outstanding event, ensuring a seamless and exciting experience for all participants.

As the morning sun pierced through the crisp, clear sky, the runners set off to the thunderous blast of the CSU cannon. With boundless enthusiasm, they navigated the 5k course through campus, each step bringing them closer to the finish line around the CSU Oval. The
scenery was nothing short of breathtaking, as the leaves on the trees lining the route transformed into brilliant shades of yellow, mirroring the green and gold colors of CSU.

Adding a touch of whimsy to the event was none other than Cam the Ram, the CSU mascot. His spirited presence brought smiles to the faces of participants and spectators alike. As the runners crossed the finish line, the air buzzed with excitement and a sense of accomplishment.

The overall male winner for the 2023 Homecoming 5k was Oisin O’Gailin in a blazing 14:21- which for those of you who don’t want to do the math, is a 4:38 min/mile pace! O’Gailin is a Wyoming cross country and track alumni, coming to the U.S. from Ireland. Thomas Rohr took the second fastest time of the day in an impressive 15:07, with Keagen Crosby close on his heels in 15:09, CSU cross country’s very own freshman!

The first place female runner was Shelley McDonald, a masters runner (40+), in a speedy 17:20, which is 5:35 pace! The second place finisher was Ashlyn Hillyard in 17:28, a computer science student at CSU who was out showing her Ram pride, followed by Jess Cunningham, a Fort Collins local, finishing 3rd in 17:40.

The first place nonbinary runner, Henry Warfield flew to a 17:35 on this crisp morning, which is 5:40 pace! Warfield was followed by Carmen Gerdes in 20:17 and Cole Lacount in 35:57 to finish up the nonbinary podium.

After the 5k there was a fun run for the kiddos around the Oval, where some kids nearly out-sprinted the lead cyclist! It’s also important to recognize the runners who raced the virtual 5k. Coast to coast there were athletes in North Carolina, Kansas, Colorado, Nevada, and
California!

The celebration didn’t end at the finish line. Live music filled the air, resonating with the high spirits of everyone in attendance. It was a true reflection of the unity, pride, and shared love for Colorado State University that made this event a remarkable success.

The 43rd Colorado State University Homecoming 5K was more than just a race; it was a vibrant tapestry of community, athletic achievement, and Ram spirit. It exemplified the enduring tradition and bonds that make CSU a special place. As the day continued, with the football team’s victory echoing in the background, the memories created at this event will linger, reminding everyone that being a Ram is something to be cherished and celebrated year after year.
