2022 Loveland Classic Race Recap

Many Green Events Race Recaps begin at the start line of the first scheduled race but that is not really where the race begins. To get an accurate picture of race day, we must rewind a few hours.

The Green Events crew slapped their alarm clocks off at around 4am Sunday morning, waking well before any reasonable hour and arriving at the Green Events headquarters at 4:45am. Having been loaded the evening before, three trucks sat ready in the parking lot, heavy with orange cones, the deflated finish arch, over a dozen tables, packets that had not been picked up at early packet pickup, and the most precious of all the cargo, donuts.

After arriving at the Loveland Classic venue, the crew of 15 split into two groups: the course crew and the finishers village crew. The course crew loaded up the mile markers, cones, the aid station bin, a table, several full water jugs, and as many mini cups as could possible fit into the Gator and hit the trail to set up the course. The finisher’s village crew got to work erecting the packet pickup station, the race-day registration tent, volunteer check in, the Equinox Races tent, the awards table, and most importantly the food and water stations.

During setup it became apparent that at this year’s race, participants were going to be treated to complimentary wind.

The first event to kick off the Loveland Classic was the 10k. Ninety-nine participants blew their way through the 10k course that lapped twice around the scenic trails around Houts Reservoir and Equalizer Lake, the snow-capped mountains fully visible in the west despite the cloudy conditions. The 5k consisted of one lap around the lakes with 169 participants gusting over the finish line. If a runner could not get enough of the trails, then the broken 15k was the event for them! Those runners ready to challenge their lungs and legs, ran the 10k, rested, then tightened their shoelaces and ran the 5k.

Undoubtedly the cutest event at the Loveland Classic was the Bank of Colorado Kids 1 Mile. Full of heart, over 50 superstars crossed under the finish arch where they collected their finishers ribbon and Loveland Classic cookie courtesy of Bank of Colorado. Among the Kids Race participants was Greeley’s Scott Elementary School Run Club who had many members run the Loveland Classic as their first organized running event! Super congratulations to the first-time 1 Mile runners!

After the race, participants partook in Green Events beta testing of the Loveland Classic Finisher’s Village Punch Card, sipped on complimentary coffee from BuzzThru Espresso and Smoothie Bar, and recouped lost calories with Lamar’s Donuts and mini muffins. For those with cramping muscles, Rebound and their recovery tent was ready to help. Runners Roost was on hand to assist with running shoe questions, gait analysis quandaries, and an assortment of sunglasses to block out the haters. Breakaway Athletic Events was promoting their upcoming events while Spenga was ready to offer options to help participants stay in shape with their 60-minute workout classes consisting of spin, strength, and yoga. As sponsors of the Loveland Classic, Centerra offered a spin-the-wheel prize game and Foothills Credit Union set up a booth with give aways including blue, large-snouted piggy banks.

As a green event, Green Events was excited to have Compost Queen on hand to decrease landfill contributions. CycleBar Loveland is Loveland’s newest cycling gym, and they were on hand to promote cross training and a healthy lifestyle. Equinox Races rounded out the Loveland Classic Finishers Villages as we promoted the 10th anniversary of the Fall Equinox Marathon, Half Marathon, & 5 Mile.

In spite of blustery conditions, those who placed either overall or in their age groups took home art worked painted by the children of the Thompson School District. The first-place female and male winner of the broken 15k were awarded $50 Scheel’s gift cards. Though we were not able to award everyone who participated in the Loveland Classic 5k, 10k, broken 15k, and kids 1 mile, everyone who turned out and showed what community running is all about, are all winners to Green Events.

Thank you to all who ran, walked, spectated, cheered, and sponsored! Your involvement helps support the beneficiary of the Loveland Classic, the Thompson Education Foundation.
