2022 Colorado Run Race Recap

May weather in Colorado is a mixed bag. It could rain, it could sleet, or it could be in the upper 70s with hardly a cloud in the sky. On Memorial Day, participants of the Colorado Run 5k & 10k were treated to all three! Despite a brief spout of rain during race day packet pickup, participants enjoyed cloudy skies and cooler temperatures, perfect running weather for the Tough & Up 10k and the Flat & Fast 5k.

True to its name, the 10k course was designed to challenge. The first 3.1 miles are uphill to the top of Maniac Hill, a climb well known in the local running community, with an elevation gain of 544 ft, average grade of 6.1%, and a steep section just after mile 2 hitting 16.7% grade. Runner Grayson Lowe was the first to the peak, followed by Benjamin Randall, Joe Giannetto, Ruth Waller, Melinda Carlson, and Green Events Ambassador Alex Prigge. These top three male and female Maniac Hill conquerors earned themselves a tumbler and beanie from Colorado Run Sponsor, Proactive Physical Therapy & Performance Center. Grayson, who was the first to ascend Maniac Hill, never looked back and went on to win the 10k in a time of 35:30. Defending champion, Matthew Drake, finished second in 36:50, followed by Joe Giannetto in 38:57.  Ruth Waller, the first female to the top of Maniac Hill, also maintained her lead through the downhill and won 1st Female overall with a time of 43:20. Melinda Karlson and Jaala Knowlton followed, finishing with times of 45:52 and 48:00 respectively.

In honor of Memorial Day, the Colorado Run has a 10k ruck category where participants complete the Tough & Up 10k course while carrying a weighted pack. The ladies led the ruck category, with the top three females crushing the challenge! Raquel Valdez won with a time of 1:02, followed closely by Michelle Foster (1:03), and Kelly Hancock (1:05). Top three male winners were Ryan Carey (1:10), followed by John Hunter (1:14) and Kevin Taylor (1:23). All ruck participants were given a unique ruck patch to display on their ruck sack and two ruck participants used their children as their weights!

In contrast to the uphill 10k course, the 5k was flat and dog friendly. At the finish line, “Top Dog” Finishers Awards, courtesy of Poudre Pet & Feed Supply, were given to the 3 speediest pups. For the human runners, there was a competitive men’s 5k finish with Louis Cicchino winning in a time of 20:19, followed closely by Rogan Potter (20:24) and Christian Gerster (20:35). Top females were Lauren Evans winning with a time of 22:08, followed by Saskia Becker at 22:21 and Miho Yoshioka at 22:54.

For both race distances, the awards for the top finishers overall and in age groups were presented at the awards ceremony with each recipient earning themselves a Colorado Run tote bag stuffed with a favorite post-run snack, chips and locally made Roberto’s Green Chili Salsa, and a Runners Roost gift card.

The Colorado Run benefits the Veterans Plaza of Northern Colorado which serves as a remembrance of the valor and the sacrifices willingly made by our veterans, whether in times of war or times of peace. Each year, the plaza recognizes veterans of a specific war. For 2022, World War II Veterans were honored, and 17 WWII veterans were in attendance with over 500 people at the ceremony that was held on Sunday at the Veterans Plaza.

Without volunteers, the Colorado Run would not have been possible! Thank you to all the volunteers who came together and worked hard to make this event a success.
