2021 Mountain Avenue Mile

Chris McCullough, Race Director

There was a special addition to the Human Race this year: The Mountain Ave Mile. As co-race director of the Mountain Ave Mile, I am incredibly grateful to Lisa and her team at Green Events for adopting the Mountain Avenue Mile into this years’ Human Race.

The Mountain Ave Mile has been a staple in Fort Colins for over 20 years and is part of the running legacy of the late Jane Welzel, who started and organized this special and unique event with flare, fun and passion. The 1-mile race does more than just showcase our history and small-town charm, it promotes health and wellness in our community and inspires people of all ages to get out and move. Jane’s passion for getting youth involved in the sport of running was highlighted by the competitive youth category which always brings out our middle and high school running teams to get a preview of what’s in store for the upcoming cross-country season. That category, along with the “Beauty And The Beast” (40+ masters division), the 4×400 relay, and the open/family categories, make this event a one-of-kind in Fort Collins.

With all of the tragedies, changes and complexities that came with the global pandemic, even an event as simple as a 1-mile race was impacted. Without Green Events generosity, there was no way we could produce the race without taking a significant finical loss and ultimately sacrificing the quality of the race. The wonderful thing about combining the two events is that our missions align perfectly. In addition to other beneficiaries, the Human Race donates its proceeds to local school running teams and is one of, if not the most family friendly races you will find in Northern Colorado. We look forward to partnering with Green Events in the future to help produce four amazing races distances in our beautiful city. Thank you to all who participated this year. We look forward to seeing you next year.

Thank you,
Chris
